Ralph Thomas Orr, (1912-1942) Bombardier, New Zealand Armed Forces.

When our minister`s wife went on holiday recently to visit family working in Egypt, I little realised that she would visit the El Alamein  memorial.  While there, and knowing of my genealogy interests, she photographed the grave of an Orr which is below.

To my suprise not only was Bombardier Ralph Orr included in the casualties listed in the article ` The Orrs at War`, but I was currently in contact with a New Zealand researcher, Barbara Holt, who is a relative. Ralph was a cousin to her mother and had volunteered to do his bit  when war broke out and while in Egypt had met up with a first cousin, Jack Clendon, whose mother was an Orr. They are shown here with another (unnamed) soldier in the desert in 1942. The lower photograph shows Ralph as a young man, pre war, with his mother and sister.

Thanks to Barbara it is possible to put a face to at least one young man who lies in a foreign field.
