CAMPBELTOWN ON KINTYRE

The earliest Orrs in Campbeltown seem to be in 1641. There are several family groups from 1659 until about 1860 when they all disappeared. Probably industrialisation encouraged more and more people to move to Clydeside where there was work and better pay for the former fishermen, or indeed they joined the many other migrants heading for America and Australia. A single family group existed on the island of Gigha for many years where they appear to be the `hereditary` ferryman.
